Sanitation Department

Garbage service is provided one time per week. City of Newport currently has two sanitation trucks with a three man crew on each truck.

 

Do not place any of the following in the trash:

  • Dead animals and fowls
  • Body waste
  • Hot ashes
  • Rocks
  • Concrete
  • Bricks
  • Shingles
  • Asbestos based materials

Each owner occupant or other responsible person using or occupying any building or other premises within the City of Newport where refuse accumulates or is likely to accumulate, shall provide and keep covered a maximum of three (3) refuse containers.

Containers shall be maintained in good and sanitary condition. Any container not conforming to the requirements of this or having ragged or sharp edges or any other likely condition to hamper or injure the person collecting the contents shall be promptly replaced by the owner after notice by the City of Newport.

 

 

The following premises shall use portable refuse containers:

  • Single family dwellings;
  • Multi-family dwellings containing no more than (2) two units;
  • All businesses located in the central business district (C-1 Zone) whose containers are not serviceable by mechanical means.

Portable refuse containers shall be constructed of strong and durable material, rodent and insect proof and not readily corrodible. Such containers shall have a capacity of not more than 32 gallons and not less than 20 gallons, and when filled, shall weigh not more than 75 pounds. Refuse containers hall be equipped with tight fitting lids or covers to preclude the free access of flies, insects and to prevent the containers from collecting water during rain or snow.

Where alleys are used by residents, containers shall be placed on or within 6 feet of the alley line and not placed in the travel portion of the alley.

Where Streets are used by residents, containers shall be placed adjacent to and back of the curb, or adjacent to and back of the ditch or street line.

Refuse is collected Monday-Friday to ensure that your garbage is collected please have your can out before 7a.m. If trash is placed out after the crews have been in that area they will not return to collect it until your next designated pickup day. Remove the cart or cans by midnight on the day of collections.

The following fees apply to all refuse collections provided by the City of Newport:

  • From these premises using portable refuse containers, shall be collected once per week, free of charge.

Household refuse collection schedules will be adjusted for the following holidays:

  • New Years Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • President’s Day
  • Good Friday (Friday before Easter)
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Veteran’s Day
  • Thanksgiving (Thursday & Friday)
  • Christmas Eve
  • Christmas Day

 Changes to your scheduled collection day during these holidays will be announced through newspaper articles, and local radio stations (WNPC and WLIK) also the Newport Street Department Facebook page.
