Newport Greenway System

The City of Newport proposes to construct a river walk along the Pigeon River in downtown Newport. The river walk would extend east along the river until it meets Highway 25/70 in Eastport and West until it merges it to the proposed Fred M. Valentine Jr.  River Park at the Old Mill site. Also it will expand south to Newport Grammar School where we can involve students in environmental education along the banks of the Pigeon River. Then the Greenway will head South on Highway 321 to the Newport City Park where we attempt to connect green and open space and our recreation facility’s together.

NEWPORT-A steady sprinkling of rain Tuesday afternoon couldn't dampen the excited spirits of various officials who gathered near the banks of the Pigeon River downtown to announce the long-delayed Riverwalk project is now ready to enter its construction phase.

The project was first proposed to the Tennessee Department of Transportation 13 years ago, in 1997.

"This is a long-time coming," Newport Mayor Connie Ball said.

The 1,800-foot long and eight-foot wide Phase I of the Riverwalk project will now go out to bid.
